Getting Ahead Service
The Getting Ahead Service helps new families through the challenges of being a parent. It is aimed at new families and families to be, who may be feeling anxious, sad, emotional or isolated. This is incredibly common, and the Getting Ahead Service aims to provide a means of advice, support, relaxation and enjoyment for new mums.
We have a wide variety of exciting groups which are running now and we have plans to develop more in the near future.
First Time Mum’s, runs for six weeks for new mums to meet other mums, gather information and participate in a group run by a Health Visitor and supported by Getting Ahead. Group topics range from First Aid to Exercise. Dads are welcome too.
Getting Ahead, is an eight week group. This group is for mums who are struggling adjusting to motherhood and are looking for a few pointers and techniques for coping and improving their enjoyment of being a mum.
Walk and Talk, is a pram walking group which meets on alternate weeks in Rouken Glen and Barrhead. This is a great opportunity for mums to meet other mums and get some exercise at the same time.
Time Out, is for mums who are struggling and feel that they don’t get any time to themselves for the nice things. Come along and meet other mums and learn new skills for managing your time and reducing anxiety, have a hand massage, get a chance to ask a Health Visitor any questions and learn assertiveness skills.
Young Mums R Us, is for mums up to the age of 25 and is an opportunity for such mums to meet other mums their age and get involved in activities ranging from hip hop dance to magazine discussions. There will also be the opportunity to chat with a Health Visitor at the group.
Baby Talk, runs weekly in Barrhead (Wednesday mornings) and Millbrae Antenatal Unit (Thursday mornings). This group is for mums and mums to be who feel that they need a bit of extra emotional and social support during their pregnancy or once the baby has come along. Many women experience unexpected feelings and may feel low or stressed. This group provides a supportive environment for them to meet other women experiencing similar problems.
Wellbeing is for families from black and minority ethnic backgrounds. This group runs in Thorntree Hall in Thornliebank on Thursdays and provides an opportunity to meet other families in your local area in a supportive environment. Like all of our groups the topics are decided by those attending the group covering things like anxiety management and relaxation.
We have drop in groups running at Arthurlie House (Wednesdays between 11 and 12) in Barrhead and Millbrae Antenatal Unit (Thursdays between 11 and 12) where mums and mums to be can come along to chat to professionals in an informal setting when they are waiting for new groups to start or when they have finished a group.
We have new groups starting all the time for example, our Dads’ Club. If you are interested in attending any of our groups please call Jenny MacLeod on 0141 577 8673 for more information and starting dates.
